Bowling
Colgrain Bowling Club

People have been tossing balls around the grass since the 15th century but it took a Scottish company, Thomas Taylor, to produce standardised kit using a machine lathe.

And it was Scottish players who reorganised the game, using curling as a model, and created what is known as flat green bowling today.

Indoor Bowls

During the winter months when the outdoor season closes, we run various indoor carpet competitions on the 2 indoor carpets we have. The indoor carpets are popular with members who find the physical aspect of the outdoor season challenging.

One of the biggest challenges that older adults face is the loss of muscle through inactivity. Referred to as ‘sarcopenia’, a significant loss of muscle can affect everything from metabolic health, to functional strength if it isn’t corrected.
Without physical activity, sarcopenia can result in a loss of as much as 50% of skeletal muscle mass by 80 years old. Okay, bowls isn’t like weightlifting that results in large muscles, but it definitely offsets muscle loss, reducing frailty and weakness. Click the image to read more
